During the production of Avatar: The Way of Water production studio WETA digital out grew their rendering infrastructure and began to use Amazon World Network data centre services across the world. In August 2019, Google petitioned the state of Texas to take primary ownership over water infrastructure to ensure the cooling of data centres was given priority over domestic supplies.

Arising from three years of reserach into data centres and the CGI rendering of images for film, animation and TV industries, Liquid Temporalities enacts the processing of a single image of computer-generated water.

Autoscreenshot software captures images of CGI water being rendered in real time over 5 days. The images are composited together to create a final ‘temporal composite’ that reveals the graphical marks that appear during the image render, consolidating the long render times into a single image.
